Overview of Jeddah
The city of Jeddah is one of the major cosmopolitan urban centers of Western Saudi Arabia located along the coast of the Red Sea. Climate:
Saudi Arabia is a predominantly desert country and hence prevails high temperatures round the year. However, the city of Jeddah, being located along the coast of the Red Sea, experiences comparatively less extreme climatic conditions. Jeddah undergoes warm climatic conditions most of the year round with milder temperatures during the winter season.
The mean annual temperature is 28.4 degrees Celsius with average monthly temperatures varying by 8 degrees Celsius. Average maximum temperatures are experienced during the summer months from May to August with the months of November to March undergoing comparatively milder climates, and hence more favourable for travelling. Humidity levels also reach its highest levels during the summer months owing to the higher temperatures of the sea water. Light to moderate winds are prevalent in the city for most of the year.
Required clothing:
Lightweight clothing will be required for travelling to the city of Jeddah. Sunscreens, hats and eye shades are some of the compulsory items to be included in the luggage owing to the harsh sunlight during the day.
How to get in and around:
Driving and moving about in Jeddah Saudi Arabia, can be quite a test. It should be noted that only men are permitted to drive provided that they have a Saudi license. The license has to be which be applied for once they been given their “Iqama”.
Women are NOT allowed to drive a vehicle in Saudi Arabia. Taxis are readily available for moving from one destination to another.
Geography:
The city of Jeddah is located in western Saudi Arabia located along the west coast of the Kingdom. The city is also lined by the Red Sea. To the east are the plains of Tihama while the west includes coral reefs along the sea shores.
Food and Drink:
Jeddah not only includes high-end restaurants serving tantalizing Arabic cuisine but also boasts all the leading international fast food chain of restaurants. Local food mostly includes lamb and chicken. Specialties include kebabs, falafels, hummus (chickpeas), bourghul (wheat) and shuwarmas. Alcohol and pork is forbidden under Islamic law and applies to all nationalities regardless of religion. Popular alternative drinks include alcohol-free beer, Arabic coffee and freshly-squeezed fruit juices.
Places to see
King Fahd’s Fountain
The second largest city of Saudi Arabia, Jeddah is home to one of the biggest salt water fountain. This 312 meter high fountain is one of the biggest attractions of the city. The lighted fountain dominates the Jeddah skyline.
Floating Mosque
Situated near Jeddah’s Corniche, the Floating Mosque is surrounded by water. Not only is the mosque located at a beautiful location but the stunning white interior of the mosque and the amazing rooftop is what makes this mosque one that should not be missed out. The huge prayer space with the mosque itself located on the Red Sea, gives the illusion that it is floating beyond the coasts of the city.
Makkah Gate
Serving as one of the main entrances for the pilgrims during Hajj, the Makkah Gate is also the most prominent attractions of the city. Also known as Bab Makkah, this is one of the only attractions that have been preserved of the Old Jeddah.

Located alongside the famous Prince Faisal Bin Fahad Street and situated behind the Hilton and Sheraton Hotels, an open air exhibition of monuments and sculptures is organized. Comprising of several sculptures, the Open-air monuments museum is one of the largest museums in the world.
